The audit of Maricopa County’s 2.1 million ballots has been widely criticized, including by a number of Republicans. Arizona’s Republican state Senate President Karen Fann and fellow state GOP lawmakers pushed forward the audit based on former President Donald Trump’s baseless claims that the 2020 election was “rigged” or “stolen” by President Joe Biden and the Democrats. Maricopa County previously conducted hand recounts in November, as well as a December audit that did not uncover any irregularities....

Hutchinson joined CNN’s Dana Bash on State of the Union Sunday to discuss a number of issues facing Arkansas, including vaccination rates and the border crisis. During a COVID-19 press briefing, Baker told reporters that the president’s unsubstantiated claims of voter fraud and refusal to concede the race left him feeling “dismayed.” “I’m dismayed to hear the baseless claims from the president and his team and from many other elected Republican officials in Washington. I’ve been a Republican for 40 years.… But this latest move, to deploy the Department of Justice is so wildly inappropriate,” he said....

Arkansas Attorney General Leslie Rutledge ended her bid for governor on Tuesday, which made Sanders the lone Republican seeking the GOP nomination. The former White House press secretary didn’t only have the nomination handed to her. She received further backing. “She will stand strong against the onslaught of the liberal left’s attack on our home state,” Rutledge said of Sanders. Rutledge announced last year she was running for governor. She will now seek the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor in Arkansas....

In a 220-213 vote on Monday, the new GOP-controlled House imposed a series of changes to the Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE), an independent body set up in 2008 to investigate allegations of misconduct against members of Congress. Among the changes would be to reintroduce term limits for members of the bipartisan board, which would force the removal of three of four Democrats who are on the panel. While House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries can choose to hire replacements, the process could take months....

The GOP offer would span across eight years and leverage approximately $700 billion in untapped COVID-19 aid funds. Biden’s initial infrastructure investment offer sat at $2.3 trillion, which he later dropped to $1.7 trillion. Meanwhile, GOP senators opened at $568 billion and had only upped the offer by about $50 billion before this week’s anticipated $1 trillion proposal. Several Republicans met with Biden nearly two weeks ago to confer on the investment plan, and believe their newest proposal aligns with feedback from the president, the Associated Press reported....

Rittenhouse, 18, is awaiting a jury’s verdict in a homicide trial for the fatal shooting of two men and wounding of a third during protests over the police shooting of Jacob Blake. Lahmeyer labeled Rittenhouse an “American hero,” and said the person who belongs behind bars is Fauci, America’s top infectious disease expert. “They worship a mass murderer. He belongs in prison,” Lahmeyer said in a Facebook live stream on Tuesday, referencing Fauci....

James Risch (R-ID), was reported to have nodded off around four hours into the trial while Rep. Val Demings (D-FL) was speaking. The Washington Post noted how the Democrats’ case to subpoena the State Department “didn’t make much of an impression” on Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman Risch and that he appeared to be asleep for a “significant portion” of it. The Post described how Risch had his eyes closed and “head slumped against his right hand” at around 5:30 p....

Kennedy’s remarks came during a Sunday morning interview with CNN’s State of the Union, during which he was asked about Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and her criticism of GOP Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s plans to coordinate directly with White House counsel during the trial. Murkowski, who has in the past shown a willingness to take positions against Trump, told local Anchorage KTUU-TV last week that she was “disturbed” by McConnell’s statements about the pending trial....

Rep. Darren Bailey filed the petition Wednesday, contending that three new orders issued late last month by Pritzker violated a July 2 ruling from Clay County Circuit Court Judge Michael McHaney, who ruled that the governor overstepped his authority by issuing similar orders beyond 30 days in April. The petition argues that Pritzker’s orders, which continue earlier measures and establish health guidelines for the transfer of prisoners and for school reopenings, are “contemptuous acts which are calculated to embarrass, hinder, or obstruct” the Clay county court....
