The reveal follows a sneak-peak from earlier this year. Back in May at Google’s I/O 2022, their yearly developer conference, they gave audiences a hint at the Google Pixel 7 and 7 Pro. Showing off just the back of the devices, viewers got a look at two white phones with silver camera bars, one matte and one shiny. Of note was the differing camera setup between the two models, the Pro seemingly having more functionality.

Now Google has lifted the lid on both the Pixel 7, and it’s big brother, the Pixel 7 Pro, offering fans more details on the pair. The phones will have the Google Tensor G2, which is the company’s own processor, along with the Titan M2 chip which is intended to improve user data security. Surprisingly, Google also revealed that the new phones would come with their own built-in VPN (virtual private network) at no extra cost. This is an interesting choice because Google previously released its own VPN back in 2020, but it was at a charge of $10.99/month, and that release came with some different perks. Google didn’t imply if Pixel 7 users would be granted those same perks.
The new phones also boast several other features and improvements over their predecessors. The 7 and 7 Pro will have better cameras, able to accurately capture a wider variety of skin tones and more capable at taking nighttime selfies. The selfie camera will also now include face recognition software that will allow user’s to unlock the devices. For added security, this is paired with a fingerprint reader beneath the display. The phones will also have an extreme battery saver mode which, when in use, Google says can extend the battery life up 72 hours. As well, the Pixel 7 and 7 pro will have a Clear Calling feature. Using machine learning, the feature will endeavor to reduce background noise and improve call quality.
What stands out among this list of new and improved features is Google’s doubling-down on privacy and security, something that Google’s direct competitor Apple, has always made front-and-center with their products. The Titan M2 chip, built-in VPN, facial recognition and fingerprint scanner all point to a big focus on security, something that many fans are likely to take note of.
It’s now the season of phone releases, with Apple’s iPhone 14 already here, and the Google Pixel 7 and 7 Pro on the horizon. At $599 for the 7 and $899 for the 7 Pro, fans can soon see for themselves how the two tech giants stack up.
The Google Pixel 7 and 7 Pro are available for preorder now and will release on October 13.
