Some Nest Thermostat users have been reporting the “w5 error” plaguing their devices since as early November, blocking their devices from connecting to the internet. The problem doesn’t appear to be widespread, but still bad enough to warrant an official response from Google, which offers to replace the devices.

Users with issues are directed to contact Google’s customer service if they’ve gone through the troubleshooting process and been unable to solve the problem, where they’ll be “issued a replacement device,” according to Google. Installation for a Nest Thermostat is a relatively painless procedure, though it is unfortunate they have to be taken down in the first place.
It isn’t entirely clear where the issue originates from, but some users believe it’s connected to a recent update. Smart home devices still have quite a few kinks to work out, but when they do work, they can be instrumental in enhancing a user’s home, so they are worth exploring, including Google Nest.
